Victoria Island in Seycelles
Seychelles’ highest point, the Morne Seychellois, standing tall at 905 m, is situated on the island of Mahé and offers a breathtaking view of Victoria and the blue ocean beyond. Another natural wonder is the famous Vallée de Mai on Praslin Island, which is believed to be the original site of the historical Garden of Eden.
The Victoria Botanical Gardens will enable you to observe amazing varieties of plant life like Coco-de-mer palm, the world’s largest seed, grown only in Seychelles. When in Victoria, don’t forget to be a part of its active nightlife, especially at the Level 3 bar in Victoria Harbour. Make sure to photograph yourself standing next to The Clock Tower, built in 1903, which is a popular tourist monument. For those with an inclination for good food, Victoria is the place to be. Among the city’s specialties is the Red Snapper filet in sauce, an amazing seafood preparation that will leave you wanting for more. Victoria (sometimes called Port Victoria) is the capital of Seychelles, an African archipelago of 115 islands located in the Indian Ocean. The city is located on Mahé, which is the largest and most populated island in the archipelago. Built on land reclaimed from the sea, it is the only port of the country and houses the Seychelles International Airport. The tropical climate of Victoria allows for an all-year-round influx of tourists. The average temperature stands at around 30°C. December to April is the hottest period in the year; temperatures cool during the months of May to September. The heat and humidity is usually regulated by the sea breeze. The islands lie outside the cyclone belt. Victoria is home to almost 80% of Seychelles’ total population. Nearly 25,000 people of different ethnicities call the city their home. Victoria, on the island of Mahé, is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, and the only major port in the Seychelles. It's also the only town - every other settlement is a village. The courthouse and main post office in the centre of town have been untouched since colonial time. The streets emanating from the centre have been rebuilt over the past 20 years, giving the town a clean and modern look. There are a few old houses and shops in the city centre, but it's unfortunately barely enough to give the town any character. A miniature clock tower marks the center of Seychelles's equally miniature capital, Victoria. Attractions include the Botanical Gardens, the National Art Gallery, the Natural History Museum, the Hindu temple, the Catholic cathedral, and Market Street. On Saturday mornings, locals crowd the market to buy fresh produce and spices. There are several craft and souvenir shops in Victoria, but those who want genuine local souvenirs should be sure to get some advice first. If the town tires guests out, they can visit its most popular watering hole, the Pirate Arms.
