The mixture of the red and green colour on the hill side of Curieuse Island gives it its unique characteristics. This is the result of the bare red earth hill side intermingled with the unique flora of the island. The hills are peppered with coco-de-mer trees, one of the eternal symbols of the Seychelles. Most visitors to the Curieuse Marine National Park come by chartered boat from Praslin. A dive at Coral Garden or Pointe Rouge is one of the musts of any visit or if you are unable to dive, a snorkel around the island of St Pierre. If you have come by yatch you can use one of our environmentally friendly mooring buoys which will guarantee you safe mooring and set your mind at peace. A visit to the island should be undertaken at all cost. Most visitors disembark at Baie Laraie where the shallows host multitudes of large humphead parrotfish growing up to 1.2 m in length. At the rangers headquarters one may be struck by the number of giant tortoises lazily moving about. There, rangers will give you any information that you may require. The trail from Baie Laraie will take you to Anse José on the other side of the island passing over the boardwalk through the thick mangrove forest, which is truly one of the most breathtaking sites on the island. On the way to Anse José the history of the island will come to light with the ruins of the leper colony which is now well blended into the landscape. The Doctor's House will welcome you at Anse José; this is where the doctor who was in charged of the leper colony lived. This wonder of Creole colonial architecture has been turned into a museum containing all the information that one needs to know about Curieuse. On the beach in front of the Doctor's House sea turtles comes up at ease to lay their eggs at the admiration of visitors that have come to the barbeque organised by their boat charter.
